Standing in the Trials

James 1:2-4  consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

I don’t know about you, but I know I have faced some very difficult trials in my life. Sometimes I’ve been to that point where I just ask myself, What else could go wrong? How much more can I possibly take?

Ladies, I struggle. When I’m facing challenges in life, I tend to forget to focus on God because this life can be so distracting. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the pain and lose perspective. This verse helps me to remember how God shapes us while we are persevering through the tough times.

Do We Really Need Church?

Hebrews 10:24-25  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

I’ve heard many people who call themselves Christians say they don’t need to go to church.  I’ve heard reasons like “My relationship with God is personal“, or “I don’t need church to worship God“, and the ever-so popular “I don’t need those people judging me“.  Is this someone you know or perhaps you yourself?  If it is someone you know, how do you respond to them when they say they don’t need church?  If this is you, how do you find out what truth the Bible says about attending church?

A New Commandment

John 13:34-35  A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.  By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

I just love reading the words of Jesus.  There has never been and never will be a greater inspiration to us as Christians.  This verse from the book of John speaks volumes to me and I know it’s something we all struggle with.  “A new commandment I give to you.”  When I read this I know this is as important to Jesus as the initial ten commandments and should be treated as so.  “…that you love one another:  just as I have loved you…”

Kindness at Home

Colossians 3:12 (ESV)  Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

I once heard a speaker say we often treat strangers with more kindness than we do our own families and friends.  In that moment, with those few words, my life changed.  My mind went back to certain moments in my life.  Like all the times I’ve held doors open for strangers, which is every time I walk through a public door, really.  I thought to myself, What do I do for my own family that is THAT kind, expecting nothing in return?  Those times when I deny loaning my friends or family money, yet I graciously give to the homeless man on the corner.  When we have dinner guests, I’m charming, smiling, and happy.  Yet when I cook for my own family, I’m grumbling because no one offers to help me in the kitchen.

The Joy of Housekeeping?

Philippians 2:14  Do all things without grumbling or disputing.

Do you EVER look like this when you’re cleaning house?  Yeah, me either.  Typically, I’m running around in sweats with a scowl on my face wondering why these people can’t just pick up after themselves!  The endless battle of cooking, washing dishes, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, washing clothes, folding clothes, cleaning the toilet, and so many other tasks, gets to be more than a little frustrating at times.

When Anxiety Takes Control

Luke 12:25-26 (ESV) And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?

Anxiety is a harsh reality for many of us.  For some of us it’s just a mild annoyance we can easily push to the back of our minds’.  For others, though, anxiety can be a crippling and miserable experience.  I’ve struggled with anxiety on and off throughout my life.  Usually it hits when I have a lot of stress at home, at work, with my kids, or my marriage.  I start to feel helpless, like nothing I do is going to fix anything.  I feel trapped, like I’ll never be enough; like this pain and worry will never end.  But there is hope.  There is always hope.

A New Creation

2 Corinthians 5:17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.  The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Do you ever feel like your past mistakes make it impossible for you to move forward in life?  I think shame is one of the most powerful tools the devil has in his tool belt.  I often hear that voice in the back of my mind telling me You aren’t good enough to be sitting in this church, who are you to God?  When this happens I have to remind myself of this verse.  The old me is dead.  I am a new life in Christ.
