Trying to Do it All

Luke 10:40-42
But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Are you a Mary or a Martha?  I know most of us women are a combination of both depending on the day!  I was thinking about this in the chaos of today.  If you’re not familiar with the Bible’s story of Mary and Martha, I will summarize it for you (though I highly recommend you read about it in Luke 10!).  Mary and Martha were sisters and they welcomed Jesus into their home.  Martha was so worried about getting everything just right, she didn’t get a chance to sit down and talk with Jesus.  Mary was rubbing His feet with oils and speaking with Him; putting everything on hold to get the most of her time with the Lord.

I often feel like I’m distracted by trying to do too many things.  That distraction leads to less time with the Lord; and not just for me, but for my family as well.  This is a terrible habit to get into and I find myself having to take a step back every few months and really get my priorities straight.

If you look, you’ll see today marks one month since my last blog post.  Awful.  With the chaos of beginning to homeschool my daughter, and starting my consulting business, I’ve been pulled in about 600 different directions!  But this is what dawned on me today – I haven’t made time for doing the Lord’s work.  For some reason, He made me feel compelled to start a blog for women just like me.  I felt that urge to help others deal with this crazy life while keeping our eyes focused on our Father.  I assume since it was so heavy on my heart, eventually there will be some fruit from this venture.  But I completely put it on the back burner.  Ouch.  That’s a harsh reality to accept.  I don’t like when I realize I haven’t been doing what the Lord expects of me.

Have you ever had a moment like this?  Sometimes we have to align our priorities with the Lord’s.  This is hard, especially since we are so self-centered by nature.  The last thing I wanted to do tonight was sit down at my computer at 10:30, with sore feet from cleaning and cooking all day, knowing I have to get up at 5:00 in the morning!  But now that I’m doing it, I know it’s right and it feels good.

So how do we align our priorities with His?  I would suggest taking a couple days to just ponder on the things you feel “called” to do.  Then compile a list of the things that are most important to you.  Include the things that will cause your house to fall apart if neglected.  Put God’s desires first, your’s second, and just watch the magic happen.  When we submit to God’s plans for us, amazing things happen.

Make time for God.  Enjoy this life with Him, because without Him, everything seems to be too much to bear!

Think About It:

  1. Do you know what God has called you to do?
  2. How do you prioritize His desires with your’s?
  3. What things have to take a back burner so you don’t drive yourself crazy?
