What is an Idol?

Isaiah 2:8 Their land is filled with idols; they bow down to the work of their hands, to what their own fingers have made.

Do you know what idols are? Many people think they are statues that ancient religions worshipped. However, idols can be many many things. An idol is anything you put ahead of God in level of importance.

The Bible is pretty clear on God’s opinion on idols.  What things in our modern day society can be idols to us?

  1. Money
  2. Sex/Pornography
  3. Work
  4. Possessions
  5. Appearance
  6. Food
  7. Entertainment
  8. Other people we put before God

Idols are very dangerous threats to our relationship with God.  So how do you know if you’re worshipping an idol?  I think the best way to look at this is to analyze how your time is spent. If you’re too busy working, lusting, thinking about money, or obsessing about food, your looks, or other people to focus on your relationship with God, you’re probably worshipping an idol.

I struggle with this, too.  I tend to feel like I should always be looking for ways to earn more money instead of being satisfied with what God has given our family.  And all this does is take away from my focus on God, which is a sin. I know He will provide, as He has said, so why do I feel like I need to have control?  The answer is pretty simple: we are born sinners and struggle with the power balance with our Creator.

So how do we fix it?  Spending time in His word, the Bible, is a sure way to win in the sin struggle.  In my experience, it’s the only way. I find when I am actively studying scripture, I’m more aware of my sin and therefore can better keep myself in check.  I would recommend analyzing what gets the most of your time.  If your free time is spent playing video games, searching porn sites, or obsessing about food or money, you may have an issue to resolve.

Many of these things are not harmful, with the exception of lust, and can still be enjoyed in moderation.  But if they’re getting the best of you, what’s left for God?  I ask you to look inside yourself, and pray for clarity when assessing your idols.  We all have them, but victory can be ours in the name of Jesus!

Please feel free to share what idols you have beaten or are still struggling with.  I love to hear from you!

Love in Christ,
